First trimester ultrasound is performed in the first months of a pregnancy. Pregnancy ultrasounds are performed mainly using transabdominal ultrasound. For many women, especially after 8 weeks gestation, sufficient information about the baby may be obtained with transabdominal ultrasound only. However, in the early pregnancy, the developing embryo is very small at 6 weeks gestation, the baby is only mm long and a transvaginal ultrasound may be required to get a better image of the baby. Transvaginal ultrasound is safe and commonly performed during all stages of pregnancy, including the first trimester. It will not harm you or your baby. Transabdominal ultrasound involves scanning through your lower abdomen. A small amount of ultrasound gel is put on the skin of the lower abdomen, with the ultrasound probe then scanning through this gel.

Volta’s pile was at first a technical curiosity but this new electrochemical phenomenon very quickly opened the door to new branches of both physics and chemistry and a myriad of discoveries, inventions and applications. The electronics, computers and communications industries, power engineering and much of the chemical industry of today were founded on discoveries made possible by the battery.
16 weeks pregnant – all you need to know
I originally had a dating scan at 9 weeks which found a luteal cyst on my left ovary which was 8cm. I was referred to the antenatal clinic and began seeing a consultant after each subsequent scan. At my 12 week scan they found the cyst had grown to 12cm. I was reassured at all my appointments that they are common in pregnancy though not usually that large and they would be reluctant to do anything at this point due to the risks involved and these cysts usually resolve and disappear by your 2nd trimester scan.

Fetal ultrasound measurements can show how the baby is growing and detect abnormalities. During pregnancy many different ultrasounds measurements can be done. The GS encloses not only the embryo, but also the amniotic fluid, which helps to nourish and protect the developing baby.
The gestational sac is the structure ultrasound technicians look for when they need to confirm the presence and viability of an early pregnancy. It can be measured across and the weeks of the pregnancy can be determined with about 5-day accuracy. Yolk Sac The yolk sac is a membraneous sac attached to the embryo. It can be seen on ultrasound between the embryo and the gestational sac.

Measuring[ edit ] Diagram showing crown-rump length by gestational age. The blue line is the mean and the green area delimits the 3rd versus the 97th percentile. The measurement can actually vary slightly if the fetus is temporarily stretching straightening its body. Different babies do grow at different rates and thus the gestational age is an approximation. Recent evidence has indicated that CRL growth and thus the approximation of gestational age may be influenced by maternal factors such as age, smoking , and folic acid intake. In that situation, other parameters can be used in addition to CRL. The length of the umbilical cord is approximately equal to the CRL throughout pregnancy.
