Powell’s In the past three decades, historians and sociologists have increasingly used sex and sexuality as a vehicle to explain and interpret society, politics and human behavior. McLaren’s ambitious book surveys nearly years of sexual practices, attitudes and social policies in an attempt to construct a cohesive history of the ebb and flow of periods of relative sexual freedom followed by the backlash of repression. Using this model of “”sexual panics,”” he discusses such issues as masturbation, race eugenics, the invention of psychoanalysis, sexology and the rise of feminism; the influence of marriage manuals, and of Kinsey’s sexual research; the “”sexual revolution”” of the s and the response of the media and government to AIDS; feminist debates about pornography and the rise of a politics of “”family values. The book succeeds best as a broad-ranging survey of Western European and Anglo-American attitudes. But while his narrative of the dialectic between freedom and repression is very convincing, his survey of sexual and political trends in nearly 10 countries over years misses volumes of specific detail that could have made this chronicle more gripping.

This watch features an interesting second retrograde seconds hand and freely shows many of the movement components via a partially open-worked dial. My first encounter with the Swiss brand Louis Moinet was earlier this year, when the company presented the Compteur de Tierces to a small group of invited journalists. This timepiece was the first chronograph ever produced, dating back to It features a super fast frequency of , vph 30 Hz , representing a mind-boggling technical feat.
Indeed, some two hundred years later, only a few other maisons have matched the dizzying alacrity of the central chronograph seconds hand.

Although not, in fact, a cultural neanderthal, I see too much I dislike in modern poetry, as with much modern art. There are too many meaningless statements, cut short, chopped up for no real reason, so that what is read could mean something different to each person or could just mean nothing it all. The same goes for a blank canvas. There is too much room for the charlatan to play these games But then, some people like modern art. But art and poetry, like wine and cheese, appeals to the intellectual palette in different ways.

The superficial area of the municipality is about square miles, but which of this is made up of water surfaces of three lakes, Sturgeon, Cameron and Balsam. Sturgeon Lake is shaped roughly like a bent human arm, with the elbow pointing southwards towards, Ops, the long fore-arm stretching eastward through Verulam towards Bobcaygeon, and the shorter upper arm extending north through the eastern concessions of Fenelon towards Fenelon Falls. Cameron Lake lies a mile north of Sturgeon Lake and twenty-three feet above it.
It is shaped somewhat like a potato four miles from north to south and two from east to west. It is drained into Sturgeon Lake by the Fenelon River and is reinforced at its northwest end by the united waters of the Balsam and Burnt rivers. The former flows from Balsam Lake a mile to the west and the latter from far to the north and northeast in Haliburton County. The two rivers mingle their waters just before entering Cameron Lake.
It is of interest to note that there are three small bodies of water each known as “Goose Lake,” at or near the south west and north boundaries of Fenelon represectively. This shallow pool was originally marsh-land but has been made partially navigable by the building of a dam at Bobcaygeon. The second Goose Lake lies two miles north-northwest of Cambray village in the deep moraine-blocked valley of an ancient preglacial river.

Summary Professional secrecy of doctors became an issue of considerable medico-legal and political debate in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries in both Germany and England, although the legal preconditions for this debate were quite different in the two countries. This paper is a comparative analysis of medical secrecy in three key areas – divorce trials, venereal disease and abortion – in both countries.
Based on sources from the period between c. The fact that Kitson won her libel action may have had much to do with her status as a middle-class lady. The history of the debate on confidentiality in the British medical profession was more comprehensively addressed by Andrew Morrice as part of his study of the Central Ethical Committee of the British Medical Association BMA during the first half of the twentieth century. He also analysed the significant precedent for medical confidentiality in English law, the trial for bigamy of the Duchess of Kingston in , during which the Royal surgeon Caesar Hawkins was forced by the judge, Lord Mansfield , to disclose private information on his prominent patient.

The emphasis he gives to women’s experience of contraception, and to women’s own efforts at fertillity control before the twentieth century, is particularly sensitive, shrewd and salutary.
Angus McLaren deserves our thanks for integrating recent scholarship in demographic, family and gender history, to set the politics of procreation within its wider rationales. McLaren, a Canadian historian, makes excellent use of both primary sources and British and American secondary work as well as his own research”.

She stood on the marae sacred area and the chief of the Te Arawa tribes, Mita Taupopoki , objected telling her that she must get off his marae as she was a woman.
She stood her ground and when he had finished his objections she defended her position. She said that she was descended from a prior-born ancestor than the chief. She was not on his marae; she was on her marae. She exposed her genitals, telling the chief that that was where he came from. Those assembled were asked to gainsay her speech but no one came forward. The Maori gesture of Whakapohane had countered the argument that was aimed at her.
This demonstration was in protest of censorship in the American media. In January , a Maryland state circuit court determined that mooning is a form of artistic expression protected by the First Amendment as a form of speech.
